Off-roading in Saudi Arabia

OFF-ROADING IN SAUDI
Paradise land

For a Western woman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia can be intimidating, alien and sometimes downright frightening. But not if that woman is Leilani Basson, a former model and current freelance journalist and image consultant. Leilani and her husband Frik spent four years learning, teaching, off-roading, camping and eventually enjoying this male-oriented Islamic society

NISSAN X-TRAIL MEETS MAKGADIKGADI PANS

A Nissan in a frying pan

They said we needed a reality check. They said it should not, and could not, be done. They even said it’s a “mommy’s 4x4”, perfect for running the kids to and from school, and nothing more. So we added a roofrack, jerry cans and an extra spare-wheel to a Nissan X-Trail 2.0 dCi 4x4 – and took it to Botswana’s Makgadikgadi pans, and the famous Kubu island. Try before you buy

Big 5 Caravan and Trailer Rental
Try before you buy

You THINK you want to buy a caravan, but you’re not 100% sure. The wife isn’t convinced that she’d enjoy a week in the bush in a little fibreglass home. And you’re not sure if your car will cope with towing a caravan if you do buy one. You um and you ah, but you just can’t make up your mind.

More than meets the eye

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport
More than meets the eye

Kruger National Park: bottoms up
Kruger National Park: bottoms up

The 19 000 square kilometre Kruger National Park is as part of South African culture as braaivleis, sunny skies, and the love/hate vuvuzela. The last time Eddie Botha visited the park was in 1982, so he and wife Jennifer decided it was about time they went back, and covered the park from bottom to top

Formula Snore
Formula Snore
By Danie Botha

It was in about 2002, when the SABC announced that it would no longer be broadcasting Formula One, and DStv said that it would be broadcasting the pinnacle of motorsport on its SuperSport pay-television channels, that the perfect excuse to become a DStv subscriber presented itself. Back then I followed the sport very closely, even attending races.

Traction Control: how to use it
TRACTION CONTROL
How to use it

Except for 4WD double-cab bakkies and a couple of hardcore 4x4 station wagons like the Land Cruiser 70, most four-wheel-drive vehicles now use some form of electronic traction control system - even the venerable Defender. Here's how to use it in slippery situations
